Overview:

 This training will provide valuable information and techniques to aid in the treatment of the sexually abused child. Although the treatment strategies are described for use with child and teen sexual abuse victims, therapists and other professionals who provide services to Adult Survivors of sexual abuse can adapt these to their clients. Participants are encouraged to bring information they use in their own treatment settings with this population to share.  Participants will gain valuable techniques and information in the following areas which they can utilize in their treatment with clients:

Objectives:

Sexual Behaviors of Children:

· Identification of normal sexual development behaviors in children.

· Treatment strategies with children who experience problems with personal boundaries.

· Treatment components with sexually reactive children and sexual bullies.

· Learn five criteria in the assessment of sexual behaviors between children.

Treatment Interventions with Sexually Abused Children:

· Learn treatment interventions used with clients who self-injure.

· Eight factors in assessing trauma in the sexually abused child.

· Learn negative beliefs created by sexual abuse and techniques to evaluate children’s self worth.

· Learn how to help children develop a Personal Safety Plan and techniques to discuss sexual abuse  awareness and re-victimization.

Laura Ellsworth is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 19 years experience and the author of “Choosing to Heal”. She is in private practice and a professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Southern Indiana. She has developed and facilitated programs that aid in the healing process of child sexual abuse victims and has experience educating a wide range of professionals including mental health, healthcare and education professionals. Her therapeutic work with this area has also included groups which focused on specific areas of child sexual abuse.

Continuing Education Credit:

This is an approved program for the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board and the Ohio Psychological Association MCE Program. 6 Contact Hours will be awarded for completion of the program.
