Hello Special Education Majors, Minors, and Pre-Majors:

You have been automatically enrolled on SpedNet, the listserv for
special education majors, minors, and pre-majors. This will be one way that
you will receive information about the program, receive responses to
frequently asked questions, learn about volunteering and employment
opportunities (helpful for pre-majors particularly), and perhaps, though
not yet, use this as a method to communicate among yourselves concerning
issues that would inform your future career.
Initially, this will be a controlled list with only me (Dr. Alex
Thomas) and Liz Bailey (Special Education Advisor) posting messages and
entering and exiting subscribers. This is so you will not be burdened with
unnecessary messages (take me off the list, does anyone know where I can
get a good taco, etc.). If you have been erroneously entered on this list
and are not connected with special education then please contact Liz by
email to make any corrections ([log in to unmask]). Once we have the list
confirmed we will open it up for everyone to participate.

Some Initial Points:

ˆ If you had a faculty advisor last year that advisor is
still your faculty advisor. If your faculty advisor was Dr. Everington or
Dr. Stevens please contact me ([log in to unmask]) or Liz Bailey (Special
Education Advisor).

ˆ Student Teaching Alert - If you are planning to student
teach in the Spring of '01, please make sure to do the following: complete
your student teaching form (available in 201 McGuffey or the Student
Teaching Office) and set up an appointment with me to discuss your student
teaching placement.

ˆ Reminder to special education minors - applications
(available in 201 McGuffey) to become a major will be taken until March 1st.
                Requirements: EDP 201, 220, and 256
                                100 hours of volunteer service
                                30 semester hours and a 2.5 GPA
Please bring your DARS and a letter documenting your 100 hours with you
when you come to apply.

ˆ If you need help finding opportunities for your 100 hours
of service, please stop in 201 McGuffey to pick up a list of contacts. This
will be posted on the special education portion of the Educational
Psychology Website beginning in October.

ˆ During this first year of implementation of the licensure
program there have been many questions about requirements. If you are ever
in doubt about what information is correct (bulletin, program guides, what
my advisor says, etc.) ALWAYS refer to the Miami General Bulletin for the
year that you entered Miami.

ˆ If you are in the middle or adolescent content area and
have questions about what to take and/or when to take it, please e-mail or
make an appointment to see your assigned faculty advisor or Liz Bailey
([log in to unmask]), office # 9-6629. There have been some complications
this semester with the middle and adolescent methods classes and whether
they are blocked or not blocked. As you plan next semester's schedule of
courses for the Spring semester be sure to check in and talk about your
schedule with your faculty advisor or Liz.
