SPEDNET NEWS (VOL. 2, ISSUE 4 1997-1998)
January 24, 1998
Le Ganschow, Coordinator of Special Education

Student Teachers: Fall, 1998:
Student teaching applications for fall of 1998 may be picked up in the student
teaching office, 2nd floor of McGuffey. Please also fill out the special ed
form, which you should attach to your student teaching application. You may
ask your advisor for this form or pick up a copy in 201 McGuffey. Though you
are encouraged to preference a site, our student teaching supervisors and I
will make the final determination. As indicated on the application,
applications should be turned in to the student teaching office by February 4
or 5. Remember that we do not place you in the same site as your practica.
Also, you are encouraged to seek diverse settings, including a variety of
age/grade levels, as the special ed certification covers K-12.

Graduate students who plan to do their field experience in the fall should
obtain a student teaching application and an independent study form (from 201
McGuffey) to take their student teaching as a 5-credit EDP 605. Indicate on
the application that you are doing a 5-credit student teaching stint at the
graduate level.

Student Teachers: Summer 1998
A reminder to students who plan to student teach this summer: Let me know
a.s.a.p. if you have not already contacted me. Because of limited special ed
student teaching sites, we restrict summer student teaching to graduate
students (first) and students who seek 3 special ed certifications (if spaces
are available) Positions depend upon available spaces in year-around schools
and schools that have summer programs in special education. We therefore
encourage double majors to do their summer student teaching in general
education. If you are considering student teaching in special education this
coming summer and haven't let me know, please contact me immediately. Let me
know number of weeks, certification area, and preferred dates. We will send
out summer student teaching applications as soon as they become available.

Student Teaching Abroad
Several of you have expressed concern that special ed majors are not accepted
for the STEP program. I am currently finding out more about this. The STEP
program is highly competitive; for the fall 1998 program there were 27
applicants, from which 18 were selected. This year SBH student teaching is
not available within the STEP program. I'll update you further in the next
SPEDNET news.

Advising Issues
If you don't know who your advisor is, contact the EDP office and ask one or
our secretaries. Students are assigned to an advisor once they apply to be a
major/minor and fill out the forms in the EDP office.

Students who plan to take reading (EDT 316) and/or math (EDT 318) methods next
semester should fill out a green form in 301B McGuffey. Students cannot
register for these classes through MUCARES. For special education majors to
be accepted into EDT 316/318 you must have completed EDP 201, 256, 220 and
have junior standing.

To register for courses on branch campuses from the Oxford campus, call the
Registrar and tell them you want to take a course on the branch campus. They
will put a permit on the computer to let you register for classes. Then call
MUCARES. We generally offer one or two special ed classes on the branch
campus each semester.

Students are encouraged to take their NTE's the semester before student
teaching. For more information, go to 201 McGuffey.

The Searcy family in Palm Beach, Florida, is looking for a graduating, mature
male or female special ed, general ed, or psychology major who is interested
in a full-time job with their family. They have an adult son with autism (in
his early 20's), who has been in inclusion settings since childhood. We have
sent Miami graduates to them for over a dozen years now. One of our
graduates stayed 7 years with the family! Most recently, Ron DeMuesy, a Miami
grad in psychology, has spent a couple of years with them. They live several
blocks from the ocean and provide private live-in accommodations, a car, and
part-time graduate schooling, plus a salary. Last summer the family held a
reunion for all of the Miami graduates who have worked with their son. Should
you be interested, please contact Dr. Ganschow, who can put you in touch with
one of their former tutors and would be pleased to show you a video on the
young man and his family.
