Advising Issues
We are offering two capstones Semester 2: EDP 460, a project-oriented
capstone, offered Wednesday evenings; and EDP 4/597, a phonics practicum
capstone, offered on the Hamilton campus, 4:30-6:30 MW. Students may register
for EDP 460 through MUCares. Those who are interested in EDP 4/597 should
contact Dr. Ganschow immediately, as spaces are limited to 10 students.

Students who plan to take reading (EDT 316) and/or math (EDT 318) methods next
semester should fill out a green form in 301B McGuffey. Students cannot
register for these classes through MUCares. For special education majors to
be accepted into EDT 316/318 you must have completed EDP 201, 256, 220 and
have junior standing.

As of now, COM is not scheduled to be offered this summer. It will be offered
second semester. Check MUCares or COM department for information.

Student Teaching, Semester 2, 1997-1998
The student teaching office plans to post student teaching sites on the
bulletin board outside of 200 McGuffey on the Monday of finals week.

Summer, 1998, Student Teaching
Because of limited special ed student teaching sites, we are trying to
restrict summer student teaching to graduate students and students who seek 3
special ed certifications. Positions depend upon available spaces in
year-around schools and schools that have summer programs in special
education. We therefore encourage double majors to do their summer student
teaching in general education. If you are considering student teaching in
special education this coming summer, please contact me immediately. Let me
know number of weeks, certification area, and preferred dates.

Update on Upcoming Licensure Standards in Special Education
Special Ed Majors/Minors who are interested in hearing about what Miami's
Intervention Specialist licensure committees are recommending are welcome to
"sit in" on the Intervention Specialist Committee meeting, scheduled for
Tuesday, October 28, 1:00-3:00. At that time the Mild/Moderate,
Moderate/Severe, Early Childhood Intervention, and Gifted licensure
subcommittees, comprised of UG and G students, faculty, and teachers from the
field, will present their recommendations for these new licensures. As we
reported in our last newsletter, the new standards for teacher training
programs will go into effect for freshman who enter in the fall of 1998.
Instead of categorical certifications (SBH, DH, LD, MH), there will be more
"generic" Intervention Specialist licensures.
