Advising Issues
If you don't know who your advisor is, contact the EDP office and ask one of
our secretaries. Students are assigned to an advisor once they apply to be a
major/minor and fill out the forms in the EDP office.

Students who plan to student teach this coming summer should contact me if
you have not already done so. Because of limited special ed student teaching
sites, we are restricting summer student teaching to graduate students (first)
and students who seek 3 special ed certifications (if spaces are available)
Positions depend upon available spaces in year-around schools and schools that
have summer programs in special education. We therefore encourage double
majors to do their summer student teaching in general education. If you are
considering student teaching in special education this coming summer and
haven't let me know, please contact me immediately. Let me know number of
weeks, certification area, and preferred dates.

We have half a dozen students who will be carpooling from Oxford to the branch
campus for the Wednesday night COM 223 course. Let me know if you are looking
for a ride.

Students who plan to take reading (EDT 316) and/or math (EDT 318) methods next
semester should fill out a green form in 301B McGuffey. Students cannot
register for these classes through MUCares. For special education majors to
be accepted into EDT 316/318 you must have completed EDP 201, 256, 220 and
have junior standing.

The student teaching office plans to post student teaching sites on the
bulletin board outside of 200 McGuffey on the Monday of finals week.

Inclusion Resource Room (100A McGuffey)
A new videotape has been added to the Inclusion Resource Room: "Dyslexia:
The Hidden Disability." There are now over 20 new tapes, including several on
gifted education, e.g., "Identifying the Gifted Disadvantaged," "Evaluating
Materials for High Ability Students," etc. A new series on classroom
adaptations in language arts, science, and social studies has been ordered for
the collection. These materials may be accessed by faculty and students
across the Division.

The Inclusion Resource Room is open at the following times: Mondays, 10-12:00
and 1:00-3:00; Tuesdays, 10-12:00; Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00; Thursdays, 11-12:00
and 1:00-2:00; and Fridays, 11-12:00 and 1:00-2:00. You may also make an
appointment to visit the Resource room at another time by calling Ms. Dalton
at 529-6649. Students are not allowed to take materials out of the Resource
Room.

Also, FYI, we now have a Web Page on inclusion resources. A second WWW site
is being developed (under Miami University, EDP, special education) by Mark
Jakowski, a graduate student, who is developing the site as part of a masters
research project.

Update on Upcoming Licensure Standards in Special Education
Special Education faculty are proposing four new licensures in special
education, which will go into effect for incoming freshmen the fall of 1998.
(Students who have enrolled prior to fall of 1998 will continue under the old
licensure standards.)

The proposal calls for a major in special education being a combination of any
two of the following: Intervention Specialist: Gifted; Intervention
Specialist: Mild/Moderate; Intervention Specialist Moderate/Severe; or
Intervention Specialist: Early Childhood Intervention. Among the changes we
are proposing are the following: (a) a special course in teaming; (b) a
partial methods block in general ed for our majors; (c) offering options in
Music, Art, "children's Literature, and Personal Health, rather than requiring
all of these courses; (d) revising practica and field experiences to reflect
the new licensures; (e) offering several cross-listed courses (e.g., with
nursing, family studies); (f) including more field experiences prior to
student teaching; and (g) developing a new course on social and emotional
needs. These are just a few of the proposed changes.

In the area of gifted education and early childhood special ed, to date, Miami
has offered only a validation (add-on) certificate. In the new licensures,
both will be offered as Intervention :Specialist licensures at the UG and G
levels.

Contact one of the special ed faculty if you have questions or suggestions.

Student Representatives on Special Education Committee
Student representatives on EDP's Special Education Committee are Amy Cameron,
UG rep., and Andy Tolafield, Graduate Assistant. Contact them or any special
ed faculty member if you have questions or concerns for this committee.
