EDL F104: Leadership for the Public Good

Course Description: Leadership for the Public Good explores theories and practices of citizenship and leadership.  Using the interdisciplinary scholarship of citizenship, citizenship education, and leadership studies, we will explore what it means to work in public life and lead for the public good in local, national, and international contexts. Through intensive reading, lively discussion, and service-learning experiences that connect theory with practice, we will critically examine the meanings of leadership, citizenship, and the public good.  The course will help students develop their own educational vision and plan as it relates to preparing to be a citizen and leader in democratic public life.  MPF: IIC Social Science

Course Description: Culture, broadly defined to include the complex relationships between values, beliefs and practices of people and institutions, is a major determinant of integrity behavior. Academic integrity, for example, is impacted by the implicit and explicit messages of the academic institution, by student beliefs about the purpose of education and their own role and responsibilities in learning, and by the policies and behaviors of everyone within the institutional culture. This course will present a framework for defining and understanding integrity from a cultural perspective, and will apply the framework to current issues and in-depth case studies from academic and other settings. Course description: This course is about the big picture – past, present, and future; how the forces it reveals will affect your life; and how to confront its complex challenges using an interdisciplinary approach to decision making. We will examine the interconnected elements of globalization (through Friedman’s The Lexus and the Olive Tree) that shape our contemporary world; the environmental, economic, and technological forces driving the rise and fall of civilizations (through Jared Diamond’s Collapse); and the interlinked problems of population growth, continued globalization, and climate change (through Friedman’s Hot, Flat, and Crowded) that challenge the world you will inherit.
