        1: David Isay. (orig. aired 9/21/00): Independent radio
producer David Isay ("EYE say") discusses his book "Flophouse"
(Random House), based on his documentary about the
rapidly-disappearing residence hotels in the Bowery area of New York
City. This volume of photographs and interviews depicts the men
living in the Sunshine Hotel, one of the last of the Bowery
flophouses.
        2: Super Casinos. Pete Early (orig. aired 1/14/00): In his
book, "Super Casino: Inside the 'New' Las Vegas" (Bantam), author
Pete Early talks about the transformation of the gritty casino
capital into a family-friendly vacation mecca.

        Medicine on Mount Everest. KENNETH KAMLER has made several
expeditions as a team doctor. He's dealt with severe frostbite and
snow blindness and he's treated survivors of the 19-96 storm

Public Interest (1 - 2 pm)
        BASQUES: BEHIND THE HEADLINES. TERRORIST ATTACKS IN SPAIN ARE
PROBABLY THE ONLY THING AMERICANS KNOW ABOUT THE BASQUE (bask)
REGION. BUT THE BASQUE GAVE US THE BERET, JAI LAI (HI-lie) AND THE
ONLY DISTINCT LANGUAGE IN ALL OF EUROPE. A LOOK BEYOND THE HEADLINES
AT THIS UNIQUE TRANS-NATIONAL REGION. 1. Josepba Zulaika, Director of
the Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada; 2. Ambassador
Javier Ruperez, Spanish Ambassador to the United States; 3. Sarah
Chayes, NPR Foreign Correspondent

Talk of the Nation (2 - 4 pm)
        1: FLORIDA SUPREME COURT HEARING. Lawyers for Al Gore once
again are going before the Florida Supreme Court asking for a ballot
recount. One month after the election, Al Gore's hopes for the
presidency now rest largely on the decision of those seven judges in
Tallahassee. The legal arguments that could determine who the next
President will be.
        2: MEDIA COVERAGE OF POST-ELECTION BATTLE FOR THE WHITE
HOUSE. When the U.S. Supreme Court released its ruling this week on
the recount of the presidential vote in Florida, news organizations
raced to get the news out to the public. But, in the race to be
FIRST, some reporters got it wrong and called the ruling in favor of
George W. Bush. A discussion about how the media has been handling
this compelling and important story.

All Things Considered (4 - 7 pm)
        Lawyers for Al Gore and George W. Bush are back before the
Florida Supreme Court today, arguing for and against Al Gore's
challenge to the state's certified vote tally. We'll hear the latest
from the Florida courthouse.

        Keeping Active in Later Years. Diane Luftig from the Council
on Aging of Southwest Ohio talks with guest host John Hingsbergen
about programs that keep aging minds engaged in the years after
