Seton Hall student burned in fire
                shows improvement

                Tuesday, April 25, 2000

LIVINGSTON -- A hospitalized Paterson computer science major
was
upgraded from critical condition Monday, more than three
months after he
suffered some of the most serious injuries in the Seton Hall
dormitory fire.

Alvaro Llanos, 18, had third-degree burns from his head to his
knees when he
was hospitalized at St. Barnabas Medical Center after the fire
that killed three
students and injured 62 others on Jan. 19. He has undergone at
least five
surgeries that grafted skin from his legs onto his chest,
back, arms, and neck.

Llanos now is off a ventilator and eating and drinking on his
own, said
spokeswoman Samantha Young. On Monday he was listed in
satisfactory
                condition.

Since their son was injured, Daisy and Alvaro Llanos have
stayed at Llanos'
bedside. They could not be reached for comment Monday.

Two other students, who also were critically injured, were
released from
                hospitals in February.

Since February, hospital officials -- citing the family's
request -- have declined
to provide updates on the condition of senior Dana Christmas,
who was
                critically injured.
