Speaker: Karen Brodbeck, Strategic Leadership Solutions
One hot topic in Industrial Engineering continues to be the application of
the Six Sigma methodology to a wide variety of industries and institutions.
I found that the bulk of the tools used in Six Sigma, especially Lean Six
Sigma, are taught in IE programs at universities and colleges and
educational programs. The power is in the sequence and in maintaining the
rigor of the process. Personally, I am a Six Sigma Black Belt that
practices on the shoestring of time. I practice the methodology as a part of
my regular responsibilities. In transactional Six Sigma, the service
industry focus, much of our time is spent not on analyzing causes of defects
as actually defining the process to begin with.
Karen Brodbeck's presentation will focus on the advantages and pitfalls of
Six Sigma on a small scale, whether in a small or medium sized business,
within a particular plant that is a division of a larger company, practiced
on a part time basis, or Six Sigma developed in the trenches. Karen can
share examples of companies that she has worked with that have employed all
these strategies. So she will be able to answer questions on any type of
Six Sigma implementation that you are considering, or the implementation
within your own company.
Karen has eight years Master Black Belt Experience. She received her
training while at Navistar where she worked for 12 years as an Environmental
Chemist, Quality Engineer, and Quality Manager for the Paint Division in
addition to her Master Black Belt position. The last four years have been
spent consulting where she has trained over 1,000 Black Belts and Green
Belts in the Six Sigma Methodology. She has worked with over 30 companies
across North and South America. Karen's work has taken her in to many types
of industries including gas and electric utilities, healthcare, service
organizations, and manufacturing. Her background includes a B.S. in
Chemistry Education and an M.S. in Manufacturing Management. She also
volunteers in the educational system doing career development and creative
problem solving with Jr. and Sr. High School students.
