I have a book manuscript at copyreading stage at the UP of Kentucky on the Good
Templars (currently called TRANSATLANTIC TEMPERANCE: JOHN BULL, JOHNNY REB, AND
RACISM), so I would appreciate any references to Templars who are Good Templars
Inspired by the medieval order of Knights Templar, many secret ritual orders
borrowed the name Templars. I think one masonic group calls itself the Knights
Templar. There were several fraternal temperance organizations with Templar in
their names (e.g., the Templars of Honor and Temperance). To save verbiage I
often say Templar when the context makes it clear that I mean Good Templar. I
don't know which listserv group has had the discussion of Templars. I suspect
it is about the masonic organization.
The Independent (later International) Order of Good Templars was founded in
1852 after a secession from an 1851-founded Order of Good Templars.
