First, of all, which POP server are you using?
 
I don't know of any particular problems that might cause the problem you're
seeing on a regular basis.  We did have a small problem last night (around
8:00pm) that caused MiaVX1 to slow down.  It's possible that this slowdown
might have been enough to allow some POP clients to timeout.  I can't be
certain about that, though.
