The University of New Mexico has 5 fraternities which we own, and 11 more
which are privately owned. We have set up a system with the Greek
Authorities where they have assigned an individual to work directly with
us on all safety matters. We conduct quarterly inspections of the entire
house, bedrooms included. The greek authority has set up a system to
correct deficiencies, provide awards for those who show the most
compliance and a diciplinary committee for those who don't. We have
established a Life Safety Code fund with our Physical Plant to correct
structural and system deficiencies and have convinced the university to
install smoke detection and sprinklers in our five houses (The Chapel Hill
fire was unfortunately the card we needed to get all of this.)We work very
closely with the city Fire Marshal on the other 11 houses, who, through
much negotiation, agreed to work with our safety checklists (We have a
more stringent list of standards than the city FM.) Our program has
brought the frat houses from the "Animal House" look to almost a model
home look (yes we are still working on the dirty laundry on the floor).
What kicked off our program was our first inspection where I requested the
State Fire Marshal to shut down one of the houses. They did and we got the
attention we needed. From there, it was a matter of working closely with
the Greek Authorities and negotiating funding from the university.
