Here is a list of topics to review for your final exam. 1. Self Management and Cognitive Interventions. Review Chapter 12 and the readings on Anger Management and RET. 2. Classroom Management. Review those few pages in Chapter 13 and the readings. Be familiar with the components of proactive classrooms and teachers qualities make for well run classrooms. 3. Generalization and Maintenance. Know the strategies that we discussed from Chapter 11. 4. Medication. Look at your readings on Ritalin and the notes and Handout from Ms. Blossom. From the handout, know the major drug classess (antidepressant etc) and what they would primarily be used for. Be able to recognize some of the VERY common drugs that she pointed out. (know what they might be used for). 5. Gangs. Attend officer Knox's presentation this Monday as there may be a few "big concept" multiple choice questions from some of his main points. Look at that reading. 6. Cultural influences. This is the reading at King which we will not discuss. This reading highlights some characteristics that MAY be present in certain ethnic groups that may cause misinterpreations regarding behavioral issues. That is, these characteristics are related to cultural norms. (With the exception of American Indians, this information applies more to first generation groups) For example, for some American Indians, it may be a sign of disrespect to give direct eye contact when being spoken to by a teacher. (I experienced this when I worked with the Navaho tribe in New Mexico.) This behavior could be misinterpreted as a "behavior problem" by a teacher if he/she is unfamiliar with some of the cultural norms. There will be a few multiple choice quesitons from this reading. The format of the exam will be the same as before with slightly more multiple choice questions. There will be a short essay application on self-management and cognitive strategies. The longer essay is on Gangs. I want you to pull together what you have learned in this class to attack this problem. That is, we will use the same format we have used to attack problems in the classroom to look at a bigger systemic problem--gangs. There will have 3 parts for you to address. 1, What environmental changes would decrease behavior? 2. What new skills would be good to teach for prevention? 3. What reinforcement and incentives would you provide for not being in gangs? (think about why people join gangs). Hope this helps. See you all Monday. Dr. Everington
