On-Campus Interviewing

On-Campus Interviewing Every spring semester, school districts visit our campus to recruit teacher candidates during the months of March and April. Teacher candidates planning to participate in on-campus interviewing will need to bid and sign up for interviews by visiting Career Services Web site.

Students who were unable to attend our sign-up procedures workshop are encouraged to meet with one of our career advisors for the necessary instruction.

If you are student teaching this semester, we encourage you to meet with your cooperating teacher and university supervisor to discuss the procedures for taking time off from student teaching occasionally in order to interview and to participate in our upcoming Teacher Job Fair. While student teaching is an extremely important part of your professional preparation, cooperating teachers and university supervisors are normally receptive to negotiating some time off for this purpose.

You still have time to register with Career Services

If you will graduate this coming May or August and you have not yet registered with the Office of Career Services, you should do so as soon as possible. You will then be eligible for both on-campus interviewing and referrals to prospective employers.

To register, simply visit our Registration and On-Campus Interviews Page. If you have any difficulty registering, please make an appointment with one of our career advisors by calling 529-3831 or e-mail us at [log in to unmask].

Miami University Teacher Job Fair 2007

The Office of Career Services will host our ninth annual Teacher Job Fair on Thursday, March 22, 2007, at Millett Hall from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Event check-in will begin at 8 a.m. The “fair” segment of the program will take place from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet with school district officials and set up interview times. Interviewing will take place from 9:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Professional attire is recommended.

We are inviting all school districts that have recruited at Miami University during the past three years to participate, and will regularly update the list of participating school districts on our Web site.

Teacher Testing

As you conduct your search for a teaching position, it may be necessary to provide school systems with the results of your Praxis II tests. The Career Resource Center at the Office of Career Services has information on the Praxis Series, including test dates, locations, and registration materials. You can also pick up this material at the Student Services office in 207 McGuffey Hall or at the Career Exploration and Testing Center in 196 Health Services Center.

If you are applying to out-of-state school systems, you should contact the appropriate state teacher certification office. Addresses and testing requirements can be found in the 2006 Job Search Handbook for Educators.

Credential File Tips

Teacher candidates who choose to have a non-confidential file will maintain their own credential file. To receive directions on how to establish a non-confidential file, stop by the Office of Career Services or visit our Web site for a copy of Credential File Options. Individuals who choose to have a confidential credential file will need to stop by Career Services to establish their credential file. All confidential credential files will be maintained at the Office of Career Services. Generally, credential files should include your student teaching evaluation(s) and letters of recommendation from professors, administrators, former employers, or other appropriate persons. The most meaningful recommendations are usually from people who can discuss your teaching abilities or other skills that are related to teaching.

School systems usually request that you send your credential file if you are invited for an interview at the school district. In most cases, you should not send your file unless requested to do so by the school system. You should ensure that your student teaching evaluations have been completed and are a part of your credential file before you, or Career Services, send a copy to the school district. If your file is confidential, you must provide Career Services with a written request in accordance with Federal privacy laws and a $3.00 fee for each file you wish to send. For more information, contact Catherine Metcalfe, at 529-3831.
