The Oberlin College in the 1830's as I understand it placed students under
abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, butter, spices, coffee, tea and other
"stimulants". They followed the teachings of Sylvester Graham (the
"father" of the Graham cracker).

Joseph Smith (the "Mormon" prophet) announced a revelation in 1833 that
included tobacco (now incorporated into their book of Doctrine and
Covenants, section 89) with wine and strong drink that were not declared
to be in tune with God's will.

Ellen G. White (7th Day Adventists) also came out against tobacco by 1850.
