I am preparing a brief history of pre-AA mutual aid societies in
America. To date, I have identified the following: Native American
Temperance Societies, the Ollapod Club, the Washingtonians, exclusive
Fraternal Temperance Societies, the Appleton Home Temperance Group,
the Dashaway Association, the Business Men's Moderation Society, the
Reform Clubs (Osgood, Reynolds, Murphy, etc), the Keeley Leagues, the
Harlem Club for Former Alcoholic Degenerates, the Jacoby Club and the
United Order of Ex-Boozers. I am restricting my inquiries to those groups
that were not professionally directed and that were organized by and for
those with drinking problems (thus the exclusion of the Oxford Group). If
any list members have run across pre-AA mutual aid societies other than
those noted above, I would appreciate hearing about them.
