This conference seems appropriate for ATHG-ers who want to organize a session
on the temperance movement. Call for papers NOT limited to Indiana residents.

>CALL FOR PAPERS
>
>The 18th annual meeting of the Indiana Association of Historians will be
>held at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, on Friday and Saturday,
>February 27-28, 1998.
>
>Conference Theme: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL MOVEMENTS
>
>This theme is to be interpreted broadly, including any historical era or
>geographical location. In the United States, topics dealing with the
>abolitionist and women's suffrage movements, the labor struggles of the
>1930s, and the numerous campaigns for political rights and civil liberties
>over the past half century come quickly to mind. The anti-colonial
>movements in Africa, the liberation struggles in Latin America, and the
>recent efforts of Eastern Europeans to take charge of their destiny are
>other such examples, as are political movements led by religious
>fundamentalists around the world. Keeping in mind that the personal is
>also political, we welcome papers dealing with individuals whose activism
>has taken them outside the traditional political channels.
>
>While "Social and Political Movements" is central to the conference, we
>are also interested in papers and sessions on other historical topics.
>This year's program committee strongly encourages proposals on the
>teaching of history. At least two sessions will be devoted to topics such
>as "Teaching the Civil Rights Movement."
>
>Papers (ten pages--2500 words) or sessions (two or three papers and one or
>two commentators) may be based on original research, synthesis of
>scholarship, or participant experience. We encourage panelists to discuss
>their papers rather than read them, so as better to engage the audience.
>
>Proposals are due by September 30, 1997, and should consist of a one-page
>abstract plus a resume. Please send both to John Dittmer, Department of
>History, DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana 46135 USA (telephone:
>765-658-4590; fax: 765-658-4856; e-mail: [log in to unmask]).
