I wrote a couple of biographical sketches for the forthcoming 20-vol. American
National Biography (Oxford UP). As a result I have received a list of other
social reformers for which the ANB seeks contributors. Some are temperance
reformers such as Mary Hunt, Mary Leavitt, William Pledger, Frederick Wines (or
least drink-related) folk. Since I recently received a contract from UP of
Kentucky to revise my Good Templar book, JOHN BULL, JOHNNY REB, AND RACISM (and
cut it by a third), I refer such articles to others. For details, you may want
to email Julie Steiner [log in to unmask] or Susan Monroe [log in to unmask]

PS: I wrote sketches on two people for whom I previously did books: Jessie For-
syth of England, New England, and Western Australia, and William Washington
Browne of Alabama and Virginia.
