I have read Behr and it's fun, especially if you don't know very much about
the subject. Even though it's ostensibly only about Michigan, I would
recommend Larry Engelmann's <Intemperance: The Lost War Against Liquor>. It
not only covers the usual social history but has an excellent chapter on
the political actions leading to repeal. It too inspired a TV
documentary--part of PBS's "American Experience" series entitled "Demon
Rum" which my students always enjoy.
