There was a post (forwarded from H-Women) on H-Albion from Louise Walker
(Monash University, Australia). She is researching everyday life of men, women
and youths in the Australian hotel and liquor industries, 1890-1920, with
emphasis on the construction of working class identity and the boundaries
between respectability and unrespectability. She is interested in relevant
American literature. I know that for England there have been relevant
publications by David Gutzke and Peter Bailey. A dissertation on the English
barmaid was completed several years ago by my former student, V. Padmavathy
(now Padma Manian). Unfortunately, my attempt to email Louise Walker failed
(email addresses with characters that can be read as alphabetic letters or as
numerals can be confusing).
