I now have my review copy of Anthony Avis, The Brewer's Tale: A
History of Ale in Yorkshire, and so can provide details. To quote
the preface "This book is partly a summary and party a rewritten set
of brewery partners' diaries from 1879 to 1903." The author is the
son of a publican, a solicitor who was a director of a brewery
company in York where he found the diaries (now in possession of
Bass). The publisher is the Radcliffe Press (London), distributed
by I. B. Tauris, in turn distributed in the USA by St. Martin's
Press. The ISBN is 1-86064-018-4, the price is $45, and the
publication date was yesterday (18 Dec. 1995). I am reviewing the
book for History: Reviews of New Books. Presumably the Social
History of Alcohol Review should review it too.
