Jim Watkinson took down some manuscript references while working
recently at the Libary of Virginia (as the State Library there is now
known): (1) minute book, 1875-1888 of Friends of Temperance, Mt.
Solon (VA) Council No. 50, Mss.MsV Mi7; (2) minute book, 1849-1854 of
Sons of Temperance of North America. Vira. Madison Division (Augusta
Co.), Mss.MsV Mi18; (3) same group, but Mossy Creek Division, minute
book, 1851-1861, Mss MsV Mi17; and (4) minute book, 1838, of the Noswango
Temperance Society, Mss MsV Mi13.

The Friends of Temperance, organized shortly after the Civil War, was
active in Virginia, North Carolina, and some other parts of the
South. It is a different organization from the one called the United
Friends of Temperance.
