Gaining the right to vote was very significant. As one writer on feminism
had warned, once women had the vote they would "drink, smoke, bet, swear,
gamble, just as men do. Whether they like it or not, does not matter; men
do these things, therefore women must, to show that they are as good as
men." For more, see the chapter on "Drink and Sex" in my "Drink: a social
history of America".
