Here's a couple of other references. I've never actually seen the Du
Toit book and it may not be easy to find. It is supposed to have some
historical material. Gordon's is interesting. You might also google
Laurent Laniel, who has done contemporary studies on marijuana use in
Lesotho and South Africa. Some of his articles and reports are on line.
You could also contact Laurent directly. Chuck Ambler

John,
Brian M. Du Toit, "Dagga: The History and Ethnographic Setting of
Cannabis Sativa in Southern Africa," in Vera Rubin, ed. Cannabis and
Culture (The Hague: Mouton, 1975), 81-116, has some some material.

Subject: Cannabis in South Africa
Dear fellow researchers,
I am interested in the history of cannabis use and cannabis prohibition
in South Africa. Can anyone recommend any good books or articles about
this?
I am a researcher at the Queensland University of Technology who writes
about cannabis use and cannabis prohibition in Australia. My most recent
books are Marijuana Australiana and The Sydney Connection.
Cheers,
John Jiggens
