hey, john.  dashaway hall in san francisco (est. 1862) was a well-known
facility of this sort.  its records didn't survive the earthquake and fire,
but it was relatively well chronicled and photographs survive from the
1870s.  it began as a temperance hall but as its founding organization (the
dashaway association, 1859-1898) began to decline in the 1870s, it was
rented for a variety of purposes. if you'd like information short of actual
