There is a book entitled _The Boys in the Barracks_ you might find helpful;
it is based on ethnographic and interview data gathered during the
mid-to-late 1970s. I found much of it accurate and insightful.  Lots of
interesting stuff on marijuana in there as well.
 
I will spare you any _personal experience_ anecdots.  Oh, the stories I
could tell ...
