You are getting close, Jim. Fie on the 10,000 surveys. Of course, we were
culturally sheltered. If you didn't drink, you weren't in! And if you drank
too much, your brothers stuck you in the back seat, opened the door when you
puked, and had you send flowers to your date the next day. By contrast,
today's alkie/addicts - who may well be college drinkers in law school -
wind up in jail or prison for dui, murder, possession, etc. Cheers to you.

Subject: college drinking

Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz's /Campus Life University of Chicago, 1987
/refers to student drinking issues throughout her cultural survey from
18th century to early 1980s. It is clearly not her focus but she weaves
alcohol consumption into almost every chapter. Another useful track is
to checkout Henry Wechsler and Mary McFadden's article "Drinking Among
College Students in New England" /Journal of Studies on Alcohol 40, #11
1979. /Then look at some of his data since the PR coup of /binge
drinking. /While the measurements are not the same they are not far
off. The New England study is based on over 10,000 surveys and his
recent work is even larger. It is not difficult to suggest there is not
any serious differences between the patterns reported. Finally, I think
there are so few specific studies over time as culturally college
student drinking and other activities have been culturally shielded --
"sowing wild oats", /College is the time for that sort of thing" etc. etc.
/cheers, Jim McIntosh
