I just finished reading the PhD dissertation by Patricia Dean ("The
Meek Get In Their Licks: Temperance literature of the Early nineteenth
Century as an Expression of Private Feminism", 1991,
University of minnesota) and came away with a lot to think about. She
points out that although women at that time were well aware of their
powerlessness in politics, their realm of supreme power was in all
aspects of things that affected their individual homes and families. I
would recommend it to anyone wishing to know more about that era.

I am interested in the historical origins of official religious policies
relating to prohibition and temperance. I have quite a bit on Mormons
and the history of their "Word of Wisdom", but am less confident on the
7th Day Adventists and others. I would appreciate those with this
information contacting me to share what we have.
