As somebody who has studied the Good Templars for a long time, I was a bit
surprised at something that Donna Weis, the president of the US Council of
the IOGT wrote in the June 1999 National Good Templar:

"Looking ahead we need to face some unpleasant facts. One is that our name
turns people away. With all the information on cable television, the name
'Templar' connotes disruptive and destructive behavior."

***

"We have known about the problem of our name for decades. We know that
there are some countries where we cannot use the name because of
implications."

I realize that the Templar name sounds old-fashioned, but what is the point
re cable TV?
