This is the title of the concluding essay in David S. Reynolds and
Debra J. Rosenthal, eds., The Serpent in the Cup: Temperance in
American Literature (Massachusetts, 1997) and a course at Trinity
College (Connecticut), crosslisted by history, American studies, and
women's studies. Both the essay and the course are by Joan D.
Hedrick. She includes a copy of her syllabus.
