To the list of books suitable for a course in the social history of
alcohol, I am brazen enough to add my MARTINI, STRAIGHT UP : THE
CLASSIC AMERICAN COCKTAIL, just out from Johns Hopkins Univ. Press
(ISBN 0-8018-5971-9).  It is hardbound but, from amazon.com, will not
cost more than some of the paperbacks on the lists that have been
circulating.  It is by the way a thoroughly revised and updated second
edition of THE SILVER BULLET : THE MARTINI IN AMERICAN CIVILIZATION
