Temperance Culture

For a session at the 2000 meeting of the American Studies Association in
Detroit, proposals are invited for papers addressing any aspect of
temperance culture. In different times and places, "temperance" has had
different meanings. The word has variously meant, for example, a
moderation in all things, a habitual subjugation of the "animal passions,"
a moderation in diet, the total abstinence from intoxicating beverages,
and the endorsement of legal measures to enforce a community-wide
abstinence from specified intoxicants. Papers might discuss events or
moments in the cultural history of temperance in America or any other
nation, and they might address the relationship of temperance or organized
temperance movements to art, literature, economics, education, or
politics. Papers suggesting new directions in alcohol and temperance
studies, through method or argument, are especially invited, and
international, national, regional, and individual perspectives are equally
welcome. Send inquiries, 500-page abstracts, or 8-10 page papers by
January 10, 2000 to Jon Stephen Miller, 308 EPB, University of Iowa, Iowa
City IA 52242, or e-mail <[log in to unmask]>.
