I'm not sure what Scott may have in mind by "street life," but the classic
sociological
studies associated with that term in my mind are:

Elliot Liebow, _Tally's Corner : A Study of Negro Streetcorner Men_,
Boston, Toronto: Little, Brown & Co., 1967.

William F. Whyte, _Street Corner Society_, 2nd ed., Chicago: University of
Chicago Press, 1955.

Doubtless Scott has collected these already.
