David Zuck asked about the history of assessing blood levels of various
chemicals. A well written overview of the topic, with forensic applications,
may be found in "The Century of the Detective", by Jurgen Thorwald. It has
been out of print for years, and is a secondary source, but it contains
fascinating history of forensic toxicology, anthropometry, and related topics.
It also is well referenced. Thorwald also wrote "The Century of the Surgeon"
which is similarly inclined. These two books, along with "Green Medicine" (a
history of pharmocognosy) sparked my interest in the history of medicine at
an early age.
