Thanks so much for the info on vigilance committees in the West. That will
certainly be worth looking into. Actually, the people I'm calling southern
temperance vigilantes seem to have been more violent. They
referred to themselves as a "company" rather than a committee, but they
seem to resemble, in some respects, the people you are talking about.
From the description I have of the activities of the Southern group, they
were a secret group who physically attacked and humiliated heavy drinkers
they described as "hard cases" in hopes of either reforming them or
driving them out of town.
