For those interested, a graduate student who I worked with did an excellent dissertation on the contemporary WCTU as a "permanently failing organization." Her name is Cristin Rollins, and the dissertation should be downloadable at the University of Georgia Libraries site. She has since left academia, or I would offer a contact.
