IMS 377.G - Game Industry Field Experience
Instructor: Dr. Sean C. Duncan

The Game Developer's Conference (GDC) is an enriching and enlightening
experience for any student interested in game development, game
design, or game studies. In 2012, the Game Developer's Conference
meets, as always, in downtown San Francisco, California, but also
happens to be perfectly synced with Miami University's Spring Break
(the conference meets March 5-9, 2012).  In this one-credit course,
students who are interested in an alternative spring break experience
will have the opportunity to earn credit by attending the Game
Developer's Conference, learning about game development and design
from practicing professionals, as well as presenting one's portfolio
to potential employers along with professional networking. The course
will meet six times over the semester -- once in late January, once in
February, twice on the site of the Game Developer's Conference in San
Francisco, and then twice after returning to Oxford. The culminating
experience in late April will be a public roundtable discussion by the
students and instructor, along with an accompanying short paper
contextualizing the student's experiences at GDC.

Students who participate in the course will learn to:

* Engage with the cutting edge, current debates dominating the game
development industry
* Promote one's gaming-related work professionally (particularly
useful for students interested in entering the games industry)
* Develop professional networks within the game
development/design/studies fields.

Note: Students will be responsible for their own travel, lodging, and
registration fees for the Game Developer's Conference.  Students are
suggested to register for GDC's Expo Pass at a minimum, though
registering for at least the Indie Game Summit or Summits/Tutorials
Passes is very strongly encouraged. Please visit gdconf.com for more
details on registering for the conference.

To register, all students will be required to first individually
discuss their goals/interests in the course with the instructor (via
email/phone/Skype; email [log in to unmask]). If the instructor
approves, before registering, the student will be required to:

* Attend an informational/organization session in January, 2012
(within the first two weeks of classes).
* Provide proof of a purchased plane ticket as well as conference registration.
