These funds are great--undergrads I've worked with have used them to help cover expenses to present at conferences in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Ireland.

Please read the information below before submitting your proposal.  The first round of Parents Fund Grant requests should be completed by Monday, September 25, 2012.  Decisions about these grants will be ready by Monday, October 16, 2012.



Requests for Student Travel funding and Faculty-Student Discourse funding may be submitted at any time during the academic year.



Parents Fund Grant Requests

The Parents Fund Grants will support undergraduate student initiatives outside of the classroom that seek to involve significant numbers of Miami students in reinforcing the mission of the University and the Division for Student Affairs. Generally, the grants do not support equipment, brochures, food, or hosting/gift expenses unless they can be shown to be pivotal to the success of the initiative.

Successful proposals are usually for one-time (or start-up) expenses. If you received a grant for a start-up initiative and want to find support for additional years, you should consider other sources of funding before applying again to the Parents Fund. Proposals that demonstrate initiatives incorporating the major goals of the Division and University will receive special consideration. Those goals include:

 *   Creating a climate of inclusion to insure that all Miami students feel a sense of belonging to the campus community;
 *   Broaden students' learning and growth through active engagement with student life opportunities;
 *   Develop in students the adaptive and creative capacities for lifelong learning and success in a rapidly changing world;
 *   Establish diversity as an educational resource and marker of excellence by maximizing the representation and engagement of diverse and multifaceted viewpoints and life experiences.

In 2012-2013, we expect to have over $150,000 available for Parents Fund grants and we urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to support your special initiatives.



The first round of proposals is due on Monday, September 25, 2012. Although proposals may be submitted at any time during the academic year, early submission will assure the availability of funding. Decisions about the first-round grants will be made by Monday, October 16, 2012. Funds from successful grant proposals should be expended by
December 31, 2013.

Student Travel Request

Students may apply to the Parents Fund for travel/conference expense reimbursement if there is no other source of funding available.

An example of an appropriate funding request would be from a student who is presenting a poster or presentation at a state, regional, or national conference/meeting and the departmental budget does not allow for student travel/conference expenses.  Depending on the location, registration fees, etc., a student could receive $150-$300 toward the total costs of the conference attendance.  A student traveling to a conference/meeting who is not presenting could receive $50-$150.  Amount awarded will depend on the number of times a student has applied to the Parents Fund and any additional funding sources available.

Faculty-Student Discourse

Known for years as the "popcorn fund," the Faculty-Student Discourse Fund provides opportunities for instructors and undergraduate students to meet informally in out-of-class settings for discussions related to an academic assignment or topic.

An appropriate example might be members of a class meeting uptown in the park or in the home of the instructor to continue discussion of a book, assignment, guest speaker, or experiment, or a student and faculty member meeting to discuss a class assignment at an uptown coffee bar.  During the discussion, appropriate food/beverages might be served.  Discretion should be used in choosing off-campus venues.  This fund is intended for use to reimburse cost of refreshments at gatherings outside of regular class sessions.  These funds are not intended for in-class pizza parties or end-of-semester celebrations.
