Hey all,
Just another reminder that Liz Ellcessor (doctoral candidate in Media
& Cultural Studies in the Communication Arts dept at University of
Wisconsin-Madison) is giving a talk *this* Thursday in 2040 FSB at
4pm. Her talk is entitled "The Ability to Participate: Discourses of
Online Participation and
Disability" and addresses her work on incorporating a disability
studies approach to understanding uses of interactive, "new" media.
Glenn plugged the talk about a week ago, but I thought I'd send a
reminder in case anyone missed Glenn's email and in case anyone wanted
to meet up with her during her visit. She'll be in town for the rest
of the week, and I believe she still has some time available on Friday
-- her email is [log in to unmask], so please contact her directly
if you'd like to grab a coffee or lunch!
Thanks,

HI Folks,
AIMS is excited to be sponsoring a presentation from Liz Ellcessor
(From UW Madison) on Dec. 2. I hope you can make it – it would be nice
to have strong AIMS presence at this. It could be a good presentation
for 201 students, though I am not sure the location could hold all of
them. We could move it into a larger room, though, if the 201 folks
wanted their students to attend. Just let me know. In the meantime,
please feel free to share with your students, colleagues or others you
think would be interested in the topic. Thanks!

Liz Ellcessor is a doctoral candidate in the Media and Cultural Studies
program in department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin -
Madison. Her dissertation, "Internet Media and Disability: Policies,
Practices, and Representations of the Embodied Use of New Media,"
investigates the cultural history of web accessibility in the United States.
Broadly, her work focuses on the limits to technical use, personal
expression, and identity that are encountered in digital media and how these
tools themselves shape the nature and diversity of participation.
This event is open to the public and was organized by faculty in Interactive
Media Studies, Mass Communication, and Comparative Media Studies
