CALL FOR PAPERS: 2011 International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC) - "Communicating Sustainability"
October 17-19, 2011 @ The University of Cincinnati
Abstracts Due January 5, 2011 (submission opens October 15)
Full Papers Due April 1, 2011
http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/pcs/

IPCC 2011 invites proposals for papers, panels, and workshops that address the relationship between sustainability and communication. Communication plays a key role in helping us conceptualize, analyze, and solve the environmental challenges of the 21st century. As human beings grapple with environmental change, we rely on effective written, oral, and visual communication to understand concepts as wide-ranging as product life cycles, ecosystems, climate change, sustainability standards, national and international programs and regulations, alternative energy sources, and related issues. The conference welcomes proposals that address the following topics:
Communication strategies (writing, speaking, visualization) that are effective in representing sustainability concepts
Case-studies of sustainability-related communication
Ways in which communication practices can support sustainability efforts
Assessments of the impact of efforts to communicate issues surrounding sustainability
Analyses of ways in which the political, social, and cultural perceptions of sustainability shape and are shaped by communication
International and global perspectives on communication and sustainability
Challenges posed by efforts to communicate sustainability-related issues
Strategies for or barriers to integrating sustainability issues into undergraduate or graduate curricula for technical communication professionals
Strategies for or barriers to teaching students in engineering and related majors to effectively communicate sustainability-related issues in their fields

*Undergraduate Student Poster Session*
In addition, IPCC 2011 invites undergraduate students from all disciplines to submit posters representing sustainability-related projects. Undergraduates who attend with a registered faculty member will be admitted free-of-charge (Limit: 1 student per registered faculty member).

Submission Guidelines
Abstract submission opens October 1 ( http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/pcs/). Please submit abstracts of up to 300 works for individual papers or workshops or 500 words for panels. When submitting an abstract, please identify both a Session Type and a Track, as described below:

Session Type
Proposals will be accepted for 4 types of sessions:
Individual paper (15-20 minute presentation) – 300-word abstract
Panel (multiple authors in a single 75-minute session) – 500-word abstract
Workshop (one or more facilitators presenting a 75-minute “how to” or “about” session addressing relevant practices, issues, or technologies of interest) – 300-word abstract
Undergraduate student poster – 300-word abstract

Track
Authors (except undergraduate posters) are invited to submit to one of 4 tracks:
Teaching Practice Papers address classroom practices, including program, course, or assignment design; instructional practices; and assessment methods. Submissions will be reviewed based on relevance to conference theme, level of specificity and practicality, and evidence of success.
Professional Practice Papers address workplace practices, including guidelines, best practices, or exemplary efforts for government, industry, civic or public discourse; approaches to technology management; and related arenas. Submissions will be reviewed based on relevance to conference theme, level of specificity and practicality, and evidence of success.
Empirical Research Papers present data-driven studies (all methods are welcome, including textual analysis, qualitative studies, quantitative studies, and mixed-methods research). Submissions will be reviewed based on relevance to conference theme, relationship to prior studies, soundness of methodology, quality of results or findings, and strength of conclusions.
Position Papers present theoretically grounded discussions related to the role of communication in sustainability. Submissions will be reviewed based on relevance to conference theme, relationship to prior work, and soundness of reasoning.

Note: All conference presentations (except student posters) are publish to present; upon acceptance of an abstract, authors may submit either full papers (unlimited length) or briefs (2-page max) – review criteria will be set accordingly.
