hey all :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Only a little bit longer until Spring Break... hold on!!

UPCOMING EVENTS: (Support other Organizations as well as ALAS!) :)

Drag Show: Saturday, March 28 at Balcony

ALAS General Body Meeting: Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30pm, Location TBA. We will be having Salsa Lessons, Chips & Salsa and a fun game to play! Take a break from studying and come join the fun!

Latin American Food Banquet: Sunday, March 1 at 6pm in Shriver Heritage Room (Free Admission, Free Latin American Food) Hosted by UFO (Universal Food Organization)

Stage Reading: At 4 pm on Friday, 3 April 2009, a staged reading of the play El Jardin by Carlos Morton will take place in the Leonard Theatre at Peabody Hall. The performance is but one event in the three-day long Latin Writer’s Festival being held here at Miami April 1-3. I am seeking four students who would be willing to act in that show. The performance should last about 45 minutes to an hour, with some time for discussion afterward with the playwright (student actors would not need to stay for the discussion, although we’d like them to). FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE BELOW OR ATTACHMENT!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Conversacion y Cafe: Wednesdays from 4-5 in King Cafe :)

Enjoy,

<3

STAGE READING:

The play is a Chicano retelling of the story of Adam and Eve. It has four characers: Adan, Eva, Dios, and La Serpiente. The script requires some doubling: the actor playing Adan also plays Borinquen the Taíno; the actor playing Dios also plays Cristóbal Colón; and the actor playing La Serpiente also plays Matón, Padre Ladrón and Muerte. NO MEMORIZATION WILL BE NECESSARY — this is a reading only. Characters in the play speak in a mixture of Spanish and English.

This would not require a lot of rehearsal, since it is only a staged reading. Nevertheless, I would like to rehearse beforehand. I would like to have 2 two-hour-long rehearsals in the weeks before the performance, though I would accept a single rehearsal if that’s all the actors had time for. It would also be necessary to run the show in the Leonard Theatre itself, sometime shortly before the actual performance. This could very easily be a one-hour-long rehearsal in the evening of Thursday, April 2nd, though that would have to be negotiated.

Please let me know if any of your students might be interested in this opportunity to meet and work with Dr. Carlos Morton, a world-renowned Chicano playwright. If students would like to see the script before volunteering, it is available online through our library. The following link might prove helpful:
