Three cheers!  I feel exactly the same way.  If you can diagram the sentence,
you understand its structure.  If you can't, you don't.

I think that music provides the right analogy.  There are some people
who can play music by ear and would hate to have to learn how to read it.
And there are plenty of music teachers who can turn lessons in reading
music into a joyless, pointless waste of time.  Still for the average
person who wants to play some music, it is something that has to be
mastered. If you designed a music curriculum around their needs of people
who can play by ear, on the other hand, you would end up with the approach
taken by the Music Man.  And remember that at the end of the play,
everyone agreed that the "think method" was a great success. It seems to
me that something like must be happening in most English classes these
days.
