I attended a number of Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans but avoided Mardi
Gras itself there like the plague--too many people.
Not really. I celebrate Christmas primarily as the date to give presents
to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Easter as the date to send
bunny cards to them. As a child, and when my children were young, I did
both observe and celebrate Christmas and Easter: we exchanged presents and
searched for Easter eggs. When I was in California, I observed Pesach every
Good Friday: we would go to someone's home for a special home service called
the seder (meaning "order") and a festive meal; the prohibition of chametz
(leaven); and the eating of matzah (an unleavened bread). On Good Friday, we
read from a book called the hagaddah, meaning "telling," which contains the
order of prayers, rituals, readings and songs for the Pesach seder we would
go--as the newest member of the local Celtic Catholic Church, I had to ask
the questions in Hebrew. I confess to fudging on as much as possible in the
bitter herbs. I enjoyed the Hebrew chants and the services: Seder is the
sole purely Jewish sacrament per se in the CCC liturgy: it is critical to
the Resurrection. I feel incomplete when I miss services but we have no
bishops here to conduct them.
Horseradish and I do not aqree so my portion was always minuscule
I do remember that I had a number of Episcopal friends who, as we joked in
Jr High, observed Ash Wednesday by abstaining from washing their faces.

P.S. I mentuoned you--not by name--as an example of somneone with whom I
often strongly disagree but whose contributions I respect and admire. I
hasd been accused of ignoring persons with whom I disagreed. I contered
that accusation with the statement that sone people disagreed with me and I
respected them highly enough to read and consider what they had said. For
some others, they gave made a bad ir an unfantile unoressuin and I choose
not to use my limited tune with them--remembering the hypostatic law of
controversy

As much as I applaud careful choice of verbs, are there not some religious =
seasons and festivals that you celebrate as well as observe? I find the la=
tter the more general word. I observe Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wed=
nesday, Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, and All Sa=
ints, to mention the main but not the only ones. However, I celebrate only=
Christmas and Easter. I also celebrate Shrove Tuesday, but I don't consid=
er Mardi Gras a primarily religious festival.

I observe religious holidays; I may celebrate secular ones or not. I
celebrate Saint Andrew=92s Day and Saint Patrick=92s Day but no other
non-relative birthdays; we celebrate 4TH of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas
and New Year=92s but no other federal holidays.
I applaud victories and notable performances by individuals and groups.
(my wife and I will applaud an excellent movie=97even if we are watching
it at home on a DVD). Most of the days that we celebrate are the
birthdays of near-by relatives.

I
can’t celebrate reading). This is the kind of emotional reaction to
language that a lot of bad prescriptive rules have come from in the
past;
I’m certainly not saying that I think everyone should abandon all
usages
that someone finds odd, even if that someone is me – but I’m
interested in language change, and my finding the usage odd is possibly
a
result of my being older (like with the “graduate from high school=
221;
vs. “graduate high school” shift). It’s also possible tha=

I’ve idiosyncratically imposed limits on ‘celebrate’ that=
no

mainly trying to see if I was right or not about the usage shifting over
time. My instinct is that there was fairly sharp upswing about ten or
fifteen years ago in the use of the word in certain genres, like
education and administration, with a spread outwards from those, but I
don't trust that kind of instinct much (hence the playing about with
corpora). In short, I'm just doing the typical linguist thing: getting
interested in a piece of language and then picking at it to see what it
does. We have a National Grammar Day, but I think we also need a
Language Change is Normal Day (which I'll observe both happily and

Since it's apparently National Grammar Day ("Throw a Participle! (tm)),
I thought I'd toss out a usage-related question:

NCTE sent me an email a day or so ago with the header "Celebrate
Reading." The part of my brain that does linguistic snap judgments
doesn't like using 'celebrate' with gerunds or non-holiday-referent
nouns as objects (I can celebrate birthdays, or the 4th of July, but I
can't celebrate reading). This is the kind of emotional reaction to
language that a lot of bad prescriptive rules have come from in the
past; I'm certainly not saying that I think everyone should abandon all
usages that someone finds odd, even if that someone is me - but I'm
interested in language change, and my finding the usage odd is possibly
a result of my being older (like with the "graduate from high school"
vs. "graduate high school" shift). It's also possible that I've
idiosyncratically imposed limits on 'celebrate' that no one else shares.

I started digging around in the Corpus of Contemporary American English
(http://www.americancorpus.org/; it's incredibly useful for
English-teachers and linguists). The incidence of 'celebrate' in
general may have slightly increased since 1994 (I don't know how to
check for significance with these kinds of numbers), as may have the
incidence of non-holiday-nyms after it, but if there's a pattern, it's
not the hit-you-over-the-head type. That's just since '94, though.=3D20
=3D20
What do you folks think? Does "celebrate reading" sound odd? How about
"celebrate assessment"? Okay, that last one was rigged, but you get the
idea.

s such, and one may or may not be compelled to celebrate that event by ritu=
