Thanks to Herb for his correction on the learning of
morphosyntactically complex languages. I'm grateful for the correction
of "popular linguistics wisdom". I love the idea of adults and elders
cultivating the language through explicit teaching, which is not needed
for less-complex languages. As to contacts with other languages, I know
this is extremely common in many, many societies (which are
multilingual), but I had in mind a monolingual culture. As I recall,
recent research has shown that children growing up multilingual do
learn and store their languages slightly differently from monolinguals.
I've been wanting to read McWhorter's book for a long time. This is the
second time it has come up for me in a week, so maybe the cosmic
message is that it's time.
