Thanks to ATEG Vice-President Pam Dykstra's efforts with a couple of
long lists of names, we know that among all of you on this listserv, only a
few (28 to be exact) are also readers of ATEG's quarterly Syntax in the
Schools.
If you are interested in the topics discussed here, you will
certainly enjoy the articles in SIS. The articles are peer-reviewed essays,
polished and informative pieces on the complex relations between grammar and
teaching. Over the past year, for example, two essays have described the
teaching of grammar in Britain, highlighting another country's approaches to
the issues of correctness and the questions about grammar and writing
improvement. Another article has described the difficulties of making the
Arizona state standards for syntax an explicit part of the language arts
curriculum. An article discussed a mother's success in building grammar
vocabulary into her conversation with her young children, even as babies!
And each issue includes practical advice for teaching grammar at different
levels, as well as books reviews and news about ATEG.
And for those of you looking for opportunities for publication, SIS
is certainly a periodical to consider.
A year's subscription to Syntax in the Schools costs $12 (Student
rate, $7.50). The subscription also makes you a member of ATEG. Send a
check, payable to ATEG, to Rebecca Wheeler, Editor, Syntax in the Schools,
Department of English, Christopher Newport University, 1 University Place,
Newport News, VA 23606-2998.
Copies of all the back issues of SIS are available. The contents
are listed on the the ateg website at www.ateg.org. Send a check for $3 for
each issue you request to Rebecca Wheeler.
