For a grammar diagnostic in my freshman composition class, I use Bedford/St. Martin's online Exercise Central website. { http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/exercisecentral/ } It has a 50-item diagnostic quiz (multiple choice) which gives the students their results immediately, including categorizing their incorrect responses, and linking them to "chapters" on the website where they can find further material on that grammar issue. The students can retake the quiz as many times as they want. The site also allows the instructor to keep track of the students' results, but what I like best about it is that it allows the students to structure their own grammar review.
