I've thought for a long time that too many subjects are foisted onto the
English teacher. That's part of the problem and causes students and teachers
to be overwhelmed. I feel like I'm jumping from grammar to style to
linguistics to punctuation. It's all related and interconnected, and I don't
suggest separating them into different classes, or do I? I don't know. I
like the variety, but it's hard to go to any depth this way. I'm expected to
teach it all in one semester to a group at many different levels.

I recently polled my composition class. Many have spelling problems, and I
asked who would take a course on spelling. This was just a theoretical
question as there is no course on spelling. No one would.

Paul's post reminded me of this thought.
