I'm interested in how the "shun" words (tion) evolved (or evolutionized!) in
the first place. In my Technical Writing class, the textbook identifies
these as shun words in cases where the shorter and more easily read verb can
be used. Often prepositions can be deleted when the verb is used as shown
below.
Example.
Email can be used to give out information about campus events.
Email can be used to inform students about campus event.
I'm just guessing that the verb came first and then the shun version.
