A wonderful characterization, captured in the 1970s in the title of Jim McCawley's paper "Adverbs and other objects of wonder."

I'm reminded of Horne Tooke's characterization of the adverb as"that common 
sink and repository of all heterogeneous unknown corruptions" in the late 18th 
century.
