Larry Beason's request is timely for me because I was about to work on
making the bibliography on the ATEG website more comprehensive and
up-to-date. So suggestions and comments would be useful.
I'm not sure these are the best works for what this grad student is looking
for, but David Crystal's two one-volume encyclopedias, The Cambridge
Encyclopedia of Language, and ... of the English Language, are very
competent surveys--well-written, comprehensive, lots of interesting
sidebars, and reasonably priced in their paperback editions. Teachers and
students at different levels can find a lot here.

Subject: reference books?
A grad student who plans to teach college composition but also wants to
study linguistics has asked me for suggested reference books for grammarians
or aspiring linguists--not grammar handbooks or scholarship per se, but
solid books on language, especially the English language.
I have my picks, but I'm interested in what other people on the list
consider the best reference texts now available.
I know this is a broad quesiton and it depends on each person's individual
interests, needs, etc etc etc. But I think it would be good to see what
other people recommend. (The literature folks always have these interesting
debates on the 'best' novels. Why can't we play too!)
